Maybe there’s a theme emerging here, but I can’t help but wonder if the whole Web 2.0 thing is going just a bit too far. Witness Jane magazine’s effort to involve readers in its latest promotion:
The 29-Year-Old Virgin
Meet Sarah. She’s funny, gorgeous and hopes to lose her virginity by her 30th birthday in November. She came to JANE for help meeting guys.
Yep, welcome to the ultimate debasement for 15 minutes of fame.
Sarah will blog her way through a contrived dating process where dates apply online, readers select the next date and Jane Magazine records the whole event. Then, after the date, every guy is obliged to blog his take on the evening as well. And, just in case they haven’t talked dirty enough for you, there’s the whole message board where readers are to share stories of their first time.
What about this seems like a good idea? I really don’t know what more to say, so let’s let drop in on Cody’s bid to take the prize.
To be honest, the whole virgin-deflowering thing weirded me out a bit.
But Sarah has a great sense of humor about the whole thing and what
she’s doing doesn’t seem so strange to me now. She’s very down to earth
and easy to talk to and definitely normal. She’s just a 29-year-old
virgin. And I’m a 29-year-old with out a job. We’re all working on
something…
